Saltverk - The Company: Iceland, on the small peninsula of Reykjanes, in the bay of the Westfjords is home to co-founder Björn Steinar Jónsson's small traditional company Saltverk. 

Reykjanes has some of the cleanest seawater imaginable. Here, the nutrient-rich Arctic polar current sinks into the ocean depths and forms the food source for whales, seals and seabirds. This unique polar water is also the raw material for the sea salt flakes produced according to centuries-old tradition. 

For the evaporation of the water and extraction of the salt, only geothermal energy is used, which comes from the surrounding geysers. Thus no CO2 emissions are produced. The flakes are skimmed and dried by hand.
