Polar sea salt flakes serve as the basis for Arctic Viking Salt. This clean and unique polar water around Iceland is also the raw material for the sea salt flakes produced according to centuries-old tradition. 

As the name suggests, this type of smoked salt production can be traced back to the Vikings. They extinguished their fires with sea water, so the water evaporated and the pure salt remained, which was scraped from the logs. A pleasant side effect of the method was that the salt took on a subtle smoked flavor of the wood.

To evaporate the water and obtain the pure salt, today only geothermal energy is used, which comes from the surrounding geysers. Thus, no CO2 emissions are produced.

In pure manual work the flakes are skimmed off and dried, afterwards several hours cold smoked over birch wood. A very time-consuming process, as the salt must be turned over every hour.
