Vinification: El Pedal de Hermanos Hernáiz is a cuvée of Tempranillo and Garnacha vines from the vineyards of the Hernáiz family. The sites are located in different villages of Rioja Alta with an average age of about 30 years. The grapes are harvested by hand. Upon arrival at the winery, the wine ferments in stainless steel and cement tanks with gentle pumping over at low temperature. It undergoes malolactic fermentation. Maturation of 5 months takes place in cement tanks, in a 5000-litre wooden vat and in used 500-litre barrels. After these 5 months, the coupage is made with 10% of the wine from the previous harvest, which has spent a year in oak barrels.
The winery: One finds them again and again - the treasures yet to be discovered in well-known wine regions. At this point we can say with certainty that La Emperatriz is such a treasure. Today's finca goes back to the French empress (Spanish emperor = Emperatriz) Eugenia de Montijo, who already had highly esteemed wines produced here in the 19th century. Today's winery is unique within Rioja. Located in the extreme southwest of the "Rioja Alta" region, the brothers Victor and Eduardo Hernáiz own exactly 100 hectares of vineyards, all of which are situated directly around the winery. No grape needs more than 5 minutes to reach the cellar - one might draw parallels to the top chateaus in Bordeaux. The cooler climate yields an even longer growing season, and the wines are consequently more complex and elegant. Unusually many and large stones criss-cross the vineyards, loosening the soil, storing heat and thus providing a rare soil structure in Rioja. In addition, over 50% of the vines are older than 50 years. Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano make for balanced and very precise red wines. The white Viura here produces very deep and mineral white wines. Both brothers are working hard to make the winery one of the top addresses in Spain. The very recent international ratings underline this ambition.
According to Parker, Emperatriz is already one of the leading wineries in Rioja. The wine critic José Penin from Spain, who is rather known for his restraint, is even completely over the moon: In his opinion, the wines offer one of the best price/enjoyment ratios in the entire Rioja.
Rioja Info: Rioja is one of the most important and traditional wine regions in the world. Thanks to over two thousand years of oenological history and excellent soils and climatic conditions, great wines are produced in Rioja. The most important grape varieties are Tempranillo and Garnacha. The wines from Rioja are generally very round wines with great ageing potential.
